Acceptance

By Sarah O’Brien

When the lights go out,

happiness searches,

looking for the door,

without handles.

Denial soon comes,

salting the grain,

And cut out hearts and candles,

do nothing for the pain,

Acceptance.

Whispers promises,

Barely audible.

I wish, I could, I should

are new best friends.

desperately waiting, trying to understand,

Bargaining.

Yet Acceptance always hovers at the line,

hazy at first, not yet defined.

A blade of grass,

the first touch of spring,

a new beginning,

peace comes again.
