Real life

By Sarah O’Brien

Bitter is a taste we shouldn’t frequent

‘Real life’ is an image- given up for lent

Love is a feeling, courageous and proud

You are my heart beating, strong and yet cowed

Thoughts and emotions, spread across a page

provocation, anger, seamlessly caged

Lessons and recognition, weak in your age

No candle bra or birthday cake- a wise-fool would wage

Your patient’ ear and ‘thoughtful’ prowl

Brings nervous laughter- the disenfranchised clown

Shaky belief, a love that’s mine

Forgiveness comes slowly- a weary climb.
